HOD's Foreword

2007 saw a change in the leadership when I took over the reins in the Department of Physics and Biochemical Sciences from Mr. K.V. Munthali. I am deeply indebted to him (and of course, to all previous Heads) for leaving behind a dynamic and a well-developed department. Upon taking over, the second half of 2007 was consumed with various activities including consultancies, research and teaching aimed at achieving the goals of the University of Malawi. This required intensive teamwork and dedication from all members of staff in the Department.

Background

The Department of Physics and Biochemical Sciences is an academic department in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The department is located in the science building (block) at the Polytechnic and it offers instruction and conducts research and consultancies in the areas of Environmental Management (Water, soil and air), Renewable Energy and Food Sciences/Technology. This unique juxtaposition of several sciences in one Department fosters cooperation and exchange among traditional disciplines that share similar methodological and philosophical problems.
