Staff have conducted research and published in their respective fields of specialization. The publications have been used for their promotions in the academic career and raising the profile of scientific work in Malawi.

Staff have been engaged in writing research grant proposals in response to various calls. In 2014, the Department the department of Environmental Health (EH) won a research grant worth 171,000 USD for the Analyses of Prevention Policies for Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa (ANPPA). This is multi-country project involving Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Togo, Cameroun and Malawi. In Malawi, the Principal Investigator is Dr. Bagrey Ngwira from the EH Department.

Staff have also been involved in research on “Characterisation of Pit Sludge Management, Sludge Biochemical Degradation, and Respective Impacts on Public Health in Unplanned Settlements of Malawi" (July, 2013 - December, 2015). Through the same project, one PhD candidate & 2 MPhil candidates have been enrolled and all have drafted research papers for publication.

On another Waste Netherlands project entitled "Emergency sanitation solutions" two MPhil candidates have been enrolled. One of these candidates has his paper accepted by MJASI for publication in the next issue. The other candidate has submitted a paper to WASHDEV (Journal of Water Sanitation and Hygiene).

 Staff were also involved in used oil research project with Malawi Bureau of Standards.
