HOD- PHY AND BIO

Dr Chikumbusko Kaonga - Head of department

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND BIOCHEMICAL SCIENCES

BRIEF BACKGROUND

The Department of Physics & Biochemical sciences evolved from the Department of Mathematics and Science which offered courses in Laboratory Technology and Public Health at diploma level and also offered certificate courses in Laboratory Technology at the inception of the Malawi Polytechnic. As a servicing department it offered courses in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for all programmes in Mechanical, Electrical and Civil engineering. Later when degree programmes were introduced in Applied Sciences and Environmental Health, the Department of Mathematics and Science split into three separate departments namely:
  • Department of Applied Sciences
  • Department of Environmental Health
  • Department of Mathematics and Computing
The Department of Applied Sciences later changed the name to Department of Physics and Biochemical Sciences to avoid confusion with the faculty nomenclature, which had changed from Faculty of Applied Studies, which included departments of Technical Education and Language & Communication Studies to Faculty of Applied Sciences, when the latter two departments ceased to be members of the faculty. As a department, the Department of Physics and Biochemical Sciences offer courses that lead to a degree in Environmental Science and Technology.
