The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the oldest departments at the Malawi Polytechnic. The Faculty of Engineering was established in 1965 and it was in 1980 when specialists Degrees in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering were established. The Department of Electrical Engineering has a long record of producing top quality graduates that are the hub of technological advances in the country and beyond. The Polytechnic is the only college in Malawi that produces graduate Electrical Engineers in Malawi. At the moment, the department produces about 30 graduates per year; the figure that is too low considering the size of the industry in Malawi. To increase the numbers of graduates, the department has introduced four new programmes, which are outlined under programmes offered. The Department enjoys strong collaborative links with Civil, Mechanical, Mining and other Sciences departments at the Polytechnic and the industry.


  • Degree Programs

    1. Bachelor of Electronics and Electrical Engineering
    2. This programme focuses on high current industry including, ESCOM, and manufacturing industries like Illovo, Lafarge, Bakhresa, Suncrest, Dairyboard, Carlsberg, BWB, LWB, CRWB, SRWB, NRWB, construction companies etc. The core courses include: power generation and transmission, power system analysis, programmable logic controllers and power system protection among others.
    3. Bachelor of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
    4. This programme focuses on telecommunications industry like TNM, MTL, Airtel, Access Networks, Huawei, MBCTV and radio stations, MACRA, and the like. Some of the modules covered include telephony systems, Mobile Communication, Satellite Communication, radio and TV broadcasting systems and optical communication among others.
    5. Bachelor of Electronics and Computer Engineering
    6. This programme focuses on ICT industry and the computer hardware industries like SDNP, Malawi Net, Globe Malawi, Banks and also telecommunication companies. The core modules include; computer organization and design, algorithm analysis and design, database systems and computer and web services
    7. Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering
    8. This programme focuses on the health sector, both public and private, like hospitals, health research and academic institutions. It combines the use of engineering principles, biological and medical knowledge to better understand how these areas intersect and how they can be used together to potentially improve peoples' quality of life.

    Entry Requirements and Duration
    Candidates for PhD programmes must have a relevant Masters or MPhil degree from recognized institutions while for MPhil the candidate must have an Honours degree in the First or Upper Second Division or a Bachelors degree with at least a Credit or a strong pass with at least 2 years experience in a relevant discipline. Candidates with Bachelors Degree will be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The PhD and MPhil programmes are of 3 and 2.5 years duration respectively
