The Department of Land Surveying and Physical Planning is one of the three Departments in
the Faculty of Built Environment (FoBE), which was established by the University of Malawi
Senate in 2005 to offer Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physical Planning, Land Economy,
Land Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Architectural Studies.
To effectively and efficiently provide quality education, training, research and consultancy
services in the Land Surveying and Physical Planning sectors
To be the center of excellence for education, training, research and consultancy in the Land
Surveying and Physical Planning sector.
Department of Land Surveying and Physical Planning established its two academic
programmes in consultation with the following stakeholders;
- The Malawi Institute of Physical Planners
- The Surveyors Institute of Malawi (SIM)
- Departments of Physical Planning and Land Surveying in the Ministry of Lands,
Housing and Urban Development.
These consultative forums recommended the establishment of a Physical Planning and Land
Surveying Programmes in view of the need for qualified professional planners and surveyors
to fill the human resource gap in the industry, which was found responsible for the dwindling
impact of physical planning and land surveying services in the country.
