Geoffrey Moses Sakala is the finance officer at the University of Malawi—The Polytechnic. In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing the finances of the college. As such, his position entails developing and maintaining accurate financial statements, ensuring compliance with college and international policies and procedures of accounting, preparing material for audits, responding to queries from auditors, managing cash flow, budgeting, securing financial information, managing projects, managing and acquiring capital assets, and many others.
A trained accountant, Geoff has increasingly improved his credentials. He started off with a Diploma in Accounting from the Malawi College of Accountancy in 1997. By 2001, he had earned a Bachelor of Accountancy from the Polytechnic. In 2001 he completed an MBA at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. Besides improving himself academically, Geoff has also gained much needed experience working at the constituent colleges of the University of Malawi over the years.
He began his career working as an accountant at what was then the Bunda College of Agriculture, now the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), from 1986 to 2001. In an earlier stint at the Polytechnic, he was assistant finance officer from 2001 to 2005, before moving to the University Office in Zomba to serve as senior assistant finance officer from 2005 to 2014. Between 2014 and 2018, he was the senior assistant finance officer at Chancellor College, also in Zomba, after which he was appointed to the position he currently holds.
