 Research concepts and collaborations

  1. A potential for establishing a research link, with funding from University of Cape Town, is being explored by Mr. Kenneth Gondwe. The department will endeavour to revamp that initiative. Furthermore, Mr. Gondwe is conducting research (within UNIMA) on Energy and Climate Change. In the later, he is developing Green House Gas Emission factors for Malawi, as part of his PhD.

  2. Dr.Moses Chinyama and Dr. Kaunda initiated a project on extraction of jatropha oil for domestic energy supply purposes.

  3. Dr.Moses Chinyama has moved on with the research in jatropha oil, and is currently working on extraction and utilisation of jatropha oil for lighting. In addition, Dr.Chinyama is working on Life Cycle Analysis of concrete blocks. No publication was made available.

  4. Dr. Burnet Mkandawire has been involved in Research and Development of Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) since 2006. He developed a self-starting, Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) — based on aerodynamic configuration optimization schemes, utilising the drag and lift effects of the turbine blades. The technology is viewed to be the best WECS solution for the low wind speed regimes in Malawi and Central Africa in general. Currently, Dr. Mkandawire is carrying out modifications on the initial VAWT design to reduce parts and to improve the efficiency.

It is worth noting that around 2010, the department embarked on a ball-mill project, whereby some members of staff (then Mr. Suzgo Kaunda [Now Dr. Kaunda], Mr. Richard K. Nkhoma[Now Dr.Nkhoma] and Mr. Kenneth Gondwe) developed a ball-mill for crushing of limestone that was capable of producing high quality lime. The department is working on some legal and technical issues so that it can revamp that great innovation; possibly in collaboration with other stakeholders
