DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

BRIEF BACKGROUND

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Departmental programmes relate to design, construction, operation and management of all types of public infrastructure including roads, railways, bridges, dams, water supply systems, wastewater systems, irrigation systems, energy systems and many infrastructure projects.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED

Currently, the department offers three programmes:
  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons) - Structures
  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons) - Transportation
  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons) - Water
Integrated into the programmes are socio-economic and environmental issues that respond to the emerging global challenges. All programmes are 5-year programmes.

The department also offers a 3 year Diploma programme and coordinates a Masters Programme in Sustainable Engineering Management with three specializations in Water Management, Facilities Management and Mining. Further, the Department has a strong materials testing lab that has been at the heart of the construction industry in the country.
