The Malawi Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, offers Master of Science in Environmental Health degree programme with the aim of equipping postgraduate students with advanced knowledge, intellectual skills and competencies to effectively lead and partner with allied health care professionals in the delivery of preventive health services. The programme's curriculum is based upon the five pillars of environmental health training which are community health, food safety and hygiene, occupational health and safety, environmental pollution control and built environment.

Who should enrol?

The programme is aimed at practicing environmental health officers, food safety and hygiene desk officers, water and environmental sanitation desk officers, food safety and hygiene desk officers, district health education officers and other graduates pursuing or intending to pursue a career in the field of environmental health.

Programme duration

The recommended duration for a full-time MSc EH degree programme is 4 semesters (2 years).The recommended duration for part-time MSc EH degree programme is 6 semesters (3 years). The postgraduate committee can give an extension up to 2 semesters (1 year) for both full time and part time students under the MSc EH degree programme.

Programme fees

Fees for the MSc EH will be US$6,500 for local students and US$7,500 for international students payable in Malawi Kwacha equivalent. The fees cover tuition and thesis supervision. Research fees are negotiable depending on the type of research.

Programme structure

The programme has been structured into modules to be delivered in four semesters over a two-year period (full-time). It comprises a total of 10 modules: five in semester one another five to be taken in the second semester. Part time students may do the programme on a module by module approach (minimum of two modules per semester) within a maximum of four years. The programme comprises of the following modules:

Admission criteria

The admission requirement into the MSc in Environmental Health shall be a bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health or any other related field with a strong pass and at least two years work experience at graduate level and in a relevant field. Some candidates may be interviewed and/or their qualifications vetted with awarding bodies to ascertain their suitability for this programme.
