The Malawi Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi offers Master of Science in Environmental Protection and Management degree programme with goal of supporting Malawi's efforts to ensure environmental sustainability through capacity building in environmental management and development. The program aims to aims to develop knowledge, insight, and skills required to design, implement and evaluate Environmental Management policies and strategies in order to promote the wise use of environment and achieve effective governance of natural resources. It brings together the scientific study of environment and natural resources with practical planning and management skills.

Who should enrol?

The Environmental protection and management Masters Programme is intended for professionals and researchers from a wide range of backgrounds, who wish to gain knowledge of environmental management and the role of the environmental manager in society with regards to sustainable development and sustainability issues.

Programme duration

The recommended duration of the programme is two years, with a possibility of an extension for a maximum of one year. However, students will be allowed to make gradual investments in their higher education through a module by module approach. This will allow students whose work or personal commitments prevent full time study to build confidence with a smaller financial or time commitment. The recommended duration of the module by module approach is a maximum of five years.

Programme fees

Fees for the programme are US$ 6,500 payable in Malawi Kwacha equivalent. The fees cover tuition, research and thesis supervision. Research fees will depend on the type of research and on whether the research is done at Polytechnic or student's employer's place. Students will sponsor themselves or seek own sponsorship.


Students shall be advised to find their own accommodation.

Each student must complete all the modules to qualify for the award of Master of Science in environmental protection and management.

Admission criteria

The programme is open to students from a range of academic backgrounds, as long as they have a Bachelors degree from any recognised institution of higher learning in pure and natural sciences with either credit or distinction or strong pass with minimum of 2 years of work experience. Candidates may be interviewed to ascertain their qualification for this programme.
