School of Engineering holds career talk

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in partnership with the Malawi Institute of Engineers (MIE) organised a career talk for MUBAS engineering students on 4 August 2023. Conducted under the theme: “Empowering Youth Innovators for Wealth-Creation and Sustainable Development,” the career talk, given by Associate Professor Chomora Mikeka and Engineer Phideria Clara Moyo, aimed at providing mentorship to the students as they transition into professional engineers.

Speaking when opening the career talk, Executive Dean of the School of Engineering, Associate Professor Burnet Mkandawire, emphasized the importance of the career talk in helping students understand what it takes to become a professional engineer and contribute to the country's development. Mkandawire encouraged the students to be innovative and creative, despite limited resources.

Taking his turn, Chomora Mikeka, Director of Science Technology and Innovation in the Ministry of Education, spoke about the different career pathways available to engineering students and highlighted the challenges they may encounter along the way. Mikeka then shared his own experiences and how being innovative has taken him to prestigious universities and innovation centers around the world, including the Silicon Valley.

The other Speaker, Engineer Phideria Clara Moyo, who works with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, emphasized the importance of having a personal vision and setting priorities to succeed in one`s career. 

“You need to take care of your physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. Let me also encourage female students to be responsible with your lives and embrace teamwork,” said Engineer Moyo.

Christabel Kachiwaya, a student pursuing Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, expressed gratitude for the career talk. 

“I found it inspiring and motivating, particularly after hearing from seasoned engineers like Engineer Phideria Moyo and Professor Mikeka. After this talk, my resolve is to come up with high-impact innovations contributing to the country's development has been strengthened,” said Kachiwaya.

 The School of Engineering plans to make the career talks an annual event that aligns with the university's strategic plan. Additionally, as a way of allowing students to network with industry, the School offers industrial attachments to equip students with the up-to-date and necessary technical skills.
